Dec 6: lots of walking

It has been very windy (15-25mph) since we got here.  As a result, the waves are high and swimming in the ocean would be somewhat dangerous, with the threat of being picked up and tossed against rocks.  Snorkeling is dicey too with the waves making the water (still fairly cold) murky.  So we've basically been staying out of the water.  We parked near the Kaanapali beach and walked south along a sidewalk, to visit the hotel that will be the pickup point for our Hana (east part of the island) excursion next Monday.  Parking is very limited in Lahaina, and we wanted to be sure we'd be able to find something that morning.  It looks questionable.  The walk was further than we expected, probably 5 miles roundtrip.  We walked back north along perhaps the best beaches on the island to Black Rock, pictured here from the north.  It marks the point where trains brought sugar cane to a large wharf for shipment many years ago...all that remains is the asphalt stub of the wharf

Hot and tired (it's in the upper 70s), we rewarded ourselves with a shaved ice...delicious!  Just like on Guam!


Now suffering from a few blisters and sunburn from the walk today...tomorrow morning is the whale watching boat trip.

Dec 8: Haleakala Ascent

We left the condo about 6am, drove to Kahalui (about 50 min), gassed up at Costco (about $1/gal cheaper than elsewhere, still $3/gal), went to the Maui Swap Meet at the U of H campus, saw a few interesting items including the largest avocados I'd ever seen. We then drove up the long and serpentine road to Haleakala, the dormant volcano that dominates the east half of the island.  The first half of the ascent was sunny and then the second half was very windy and drizzly, we were in clouds most of the way. Dec 7: Whale Watching!

This morning we drove south to Lahaina again to board the Maui Princess for a 2 hour whale watching tour, with "guaranteed whales" (not sure how they sealed that deal with the whales).  The humpback whale sighting season here is Dec-Apr, with the peak Jan-Mar.  The whales come down from the northern Alaskan waters to warmer waters around Hawaii, Baja, even the Sea of Japan, for mating purposes only.  There is little nutrient value in the water (which is why the water is so blue), whereas the green waters around Alaska are full of the plankton that the whales eat tons of every day.  Supposedly about 1,000 whales are in the waters between Lanai, Molokai, and Maui during peak season. Dec 11 Last day on Maui

After having some early morning rain accompanied by some farewell rainbows   We departed our condo and drove to the Maui Ocean Center, where they do research, coral reclamation, etc.  They had excellent displays of tropical fish, rays, sharks, turtles, and more. We then drove to a wetlands preservation site...only about 60 acres of protected wetlands left on the island.   We walked the boardwalk, and saw some endangered Hawaiian ducks, black with white beaks We then visited the Sugar Museum, which told the story of the sugar industry on Maui.  It started in the late 1800s.   The central lowlands between the two volcanic peaks were the best location on the island, but there was little water available, so they had a massive irrigation project over decades to channel the water.  There were entire company towns built, with workers brought in from mainly China, Japan, and the Philippines to do the backbreaking work of...
